The “Women in Science” panel organized on the occasion of the “International Day of Women and Girls in Science” declared by the United Nations on February 11 was held with a high level of participation.
The panel held at the Prof. Dr. Mustafa Temizer Conference Hall was attended by academicians, students and invitees.
Prof. Dr. Bahar Demirel, Director of the Women’s Studies Application and Research Center at Fırat University, who made the opening speech of the panel, stated that women have been interested in science at least as much as men in history, but due to the obstacles posed by sexist perspectives, they have not been able to reach the point they deserve in both education and scientific production.
Prof. Dr. Demirel, who stated that despite everything, women have never given up on advancing on the path of knowledge and science, said, “The world of science, which is a field dominated by men, is finally turning into a production area above gender at the point humanity has reached today. Women have only been able to take part in the field of science, as in every field, as a result of great struggles. "Even though being a scientist is not among the social roles assigned to her, strong and intelligent Turkish women have achieved countless successes in every field of science, from medicine to chemistry, engineering to archaeology, with the opportunities offered by modern Turkey," he said.
Fırat University faculty members who participated as speakers in the panel, Prof. Dr. Adile Muz, Assist. Prof. Dr. Burcu Gezer Şen, Assist. Prof. Dr. Onur Yerlikaya Şaşmaz and Assist. Prof. Dr. Hasan Uzun, provided various information to the panel participants about the place of women in science.
